“Thoughts are not facts. They are a mix of opinions, judgements, stories, memories, theories, interpretations, and predictions about the future. When we treat our current thoughts and emotions as facts, we allow them to determine our future actions — turning life into a series of emotional reactions instead of informed choices.”
— Dr. Julie Smith
Who Am I
Hello, I’m Jay, a Counsellor and MSc Psychology graduate, originally from the UK and now based in Myanmar. My background spans both academic training and professional hands-on experience in mental health, giving me a grounded and compassionate approach to my work.
I Love Working With
I love working with people who want to explore their emotions, make sense of challenges, and find new ways forward. I work with children, adolescents and adults, and I am particularly drawn to supporting individuals who feel caught in cycles of anxiety, self-doubt, or overwhelm. My aim is to help people recognise and build on their strengths whilst also developing practical coping strategies they can use in daily life.
I also enjoy working with those navigating times of transition, whether that’s adapting to new environments, adjusting to shifting relationships or simply finding clarity during periods of uncertainty. I find it rewarding to walk alongside people as they discover resilience they may not have realised they had.
Some of My Favorite Approaches
I draw on a range of approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, person-centred principles, psychoeducation and solution-focused methods. I also incorporate mindfulness and emotional regulation strategies when helpful.
Incorporating a mix of approaches allows me to adapt to the individual needs of each client, whether they are looking for structure and practical tools, or a space to reflect and explore at their own pace. My aim is always to work in a way that feels supportive and tailored to the individual in front of me.
How I Can Help
I aim to create a safe, collaborative space where we can slow down and make sense of what is happening. Alongside this, I support clients in building tools that can be carried into everyday life – Whether that means managing anxiety and stress, strengthening relationships, or improving confidence or performance at school or work.
My focus is always on working together in a way that feel supporting and constructive, so that progress is not only possible but meaningful and lasting.
I believe
I strongly believe in the resilience of every human being. I aim to understand your challenges and identify your strengths and resources. Therapy is about personal change with professional support. I respect your perceptions, values, and goals in a non-judgmental way, helping you resolve future difficulties more independently. I ensure quality therapy through regular supervision and further training.
What it’s like in a Session with Me
My style is calm, approachable and down to earth. I work in a structured but flexible way, so sessions have clear focus while still leaving room for reflection when it’s helpful.
You can expect me to be engaged and collaborative. Asking question, exploring ideas and encouraging practical steps where appropriate. My goal is for sessions to feel steady and supportive, while also giving you a sense of positive progression.
More about me
Outside of work, I enjoy swimming and going for walks. I am a big fan of films and video games, which give me a chance to unwind and engage with challenges in a slightly different way. But my favourite thing to do is find food spots and places to eat. I can always be
persuaded to try something new, whether that is eating new food or exploring new places.
